Another Day At Work

About

Created for the ACM Studio Jam 2024 under the theme “Break the Cycle.” This pixel‑art narrative game explores how empathy can disrupt repetitive, toxic cycles in the workplace.

My Role

Solo developer: pixel art, gameplay vibe programming, dialogue system implementation

Tools

Unity • Visual Studio • Photoshop

Gameplay

Players alternate between two scenes:

  • Coworker conversations, where dialogue reveals that employees are being fired one by one.

  • Sorting mini‑game, where mistakes lead to termination and a return to the main menu.

After three days, the final level becomes intentionally impossible, forcing a confrontation with the boss. The cycle only breaks if the player offers him a plushie, a small act of kindness that softens him and ends the loop.

Process

I felt stuck in my own routine when I joined the jam, so the theme resonated deeply. I wanted to explore how one might break out of cycles not through rebellion, but through empathy. Crafting the right story was the hardest part. I really wanted to learn how to build a dialogue system in Unity, so that challenge inspired the narrative. Through this project, I discovered how mechanics and dialogue can work together to create emotional impact.

Process

I've been wanting to make film noir-inspired game for a while, and I just happened to be learning more about animation in Unity 2D. a game about superstition, but I didn't know spe inspired by the idea of making a game about superstitionA game about letting go of superstition, of self-doubt, of the idea that you need something external to succeed. It’s a reminder to give yourself credit.
